The Evolution of Public Education: From Education to Indoctrination

The Evolution of Public Education: From Education to Indoctrination (still in progress)

As Christian leaders we can all see that our nation is changing.  The way average people think about shameful things is changing.  Why?  How?  We can blame the world, sin, and satan, and we would be right.  But what tool has Satan used to change so many minds, so quickly, and so effectively?

Hitler said it best, when he wrote in Mien Kampf, “whoever has the youth has the future."  He is also quoted as saying, "Give me a child when he's 7 and he's mine forever."  For Adolf Hitler, public education would be the key to ensure that he changed the mind and soul of Germany.

The principle is true, as we see in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it."

The word "Train" does not mean to teach Bible stories and morality.  The word has the idea of, to "Make narrow" and to "Be narrow."  It also has the figurative image of to "Strangle," making an opening smaller.  Check it out in Gesenius' Hebrew Lexicon of the Old Testament.

As Christian parents we are to be "Narrowing" that which our children hear, see, and learn.  To correct harmful indoctrination after the fact is better than doing nothing, but it's not what God has ordered regarding the proper raising of children.  We are to "Narrow" the child's learning into the way they should go, and the Church should be supporting, encouraging, and assisting families to do so.

For the majority of human history, parents were the teachers of their children, the preparers of their children’s future.  From faith, morality and social values, to the child’s future life-work, the child was taught what the parents wanted the child to believe, what the parents wanted the child to know, and what the parents wanted the child to do.  This system worked very well for thousands of years.

However, public education as we now know it,  has had much less time for observation, and so far, the track record does not look good.

First, let’s look at how public education in this country began.

The Massachusetts Bay Colony was concerned about parents who did not teach their children what was necessary for becoming decent, God-fearing, citizens, viz., reading, laws, morality, the Christian faith, and a good work ethic.  Notice the law puts the responsibility of the moral and educational outcome of the children on the parents.

Massachusetts School Law (1642)
Forasmuch as the good education of children is of singular behoof and benefit to any Common-wealth; and whereas many parents & masters are too indulgent and negligent of their duty in that kind. It is therfore ordered that the Select men of every town, in the severall precincts and quarters where they dwell, shall have a vigilant eye over their brethren & neighbours, to see, first that none of them shall suffer so much barbarism in any of their families as not to indeavour to teach by themselves or others, their children & apprentices so much learning as may enable them perfectly to read the English tongue, & knowledge of the Capital Lawes: upon penaltie of twentie shillings for each neglect therin.
Also that all masters of families do once a week (at the least) catechize their children and servants in the grounds & principles of Religion, & if any be unable to do so much: that then at the least they procure such children or apprentices to learn some short orthodox catechism without book, that they may be able to answer unto the questions that shall be propounded to them out of such catechism by their parents or masters or any of the Select men when they shall call them to a tryall of what they have learned of this kind.
And further that all parents and masters do breed & bring up their children & apprentices in some honest lawful calling, labour or employment, either in husbandry, or some other trade profitable for themselves, and the Common-wealth if they will not or cannot train them up in learning to fit them for higher employments.
And if any of the Select men after admonition by them given to such masters of families shall find them still negligent of their duty in the particulars aforementioned, wherby children and servants become rude, stubborn & unruly; the said Select men with the help of two Magistrates, or the next County court for that Shire, shall take such children or apprentices from them & place them with some masters for years (boyes till they come to twenty one, and girls eighteen years of age compleat) which will more strictly look unto, and force them to submit unto government according to the rules of this order, if by fair means and former instructions they will not be drawn into it.

The Old Deluder Act (1647)
It being one chief project of that old deluder, Satan, to keep men from the knowledge of the Scriptures, as in former times by keeping them in an unknown tongue, so in these latter times by persuading from the use of tongues, that so that at least the true sense and meaning of the original might be clouded and corrupted with false glosses of saint-seeming deceivers; and to the end that learning may not be buried in the grave of our forefathers, in church and commonwealth, the Lord assisting our endeavors.
It is therefore ordered that every township in this jurisdiction, after the Lord hath increased them to fifty households shall forthwith appoint one within their town to teach all such children as shall resort to him to write and read, whose wages shall be paid either by the parents or masters of such children, or by the inhabitants in general, by way of supply, as the major part of those that order the prudentials of the town shall appoint; provided those that send their children be not oppressed by paying much more than they can have them taught for in other towns.
And it is further ordered, that when any town shall increase to the number of one hundred families or householders, they shall set up a grammar school, the master thereof being able to instruct youth so far as they may be fitted for the university, provided that if any town neglect the performance hereof above one year that every such town shall pay 5 pounds to the next school till they shall perform this order.

In the beginning of public education in this country, Christian principles and morality were expected to be taught in the home, but as a backup, they were taught in the schools.  The Bible was the primary textbook taught in the classroom, and moral behavior was expected from teachers, students, and student’s families alike.

Fast forward to today, and observe some of the the effects of secular and anti-Christian, public education,

Creation - the only unacceptable belief about our origin, is the biblical account of creation

Religion - all religions are celebrated and are preferred to Christianity, all cultures are to be celebrated, except Christian-influenced Western-culture, criticism of Islam is non-existent, whereas all-out condemnation of Christianity is normative, the reverential treatment of the name, Jesus, is virtually banned.

Pagan Morality - sex, condoms, abortion, homosexuality, gender-confusion, transgender, this is paganism, and is celebrated in our public schools.
Social politics - America Is the problem in the world, Christianity is the problem in the world, human beings in general are the problem in the world.  In Economics - we can see that free-market-capitalism is unfair, socialism is the solution, zero-sum-game theory (prosperity only comes by another's loss), ex., America became wealthy by driving Africa to poverty.  In History -  history is often taught from an Anti-Christian / anti-American perspective, American patriotism is equivalent to bigotry, closed boarders and voting ID is equivalent to racism

Is there enough time? - between the school day, and homework, the average student spends 40+ hrs, not to mention, travel time and extra-curricular activities, away from the influence of the Christian faith.  With this much time spent under the influence of anti-Christian worldview, how much time is really left for the parents and church to influence the child.  Recent surveys shows that on average, parents spend less than eight hours per week with their children.
The Mission of WSCS West Sayville Christian School exists to assist Christian families by providing a Christ- centered, Bible-based, academically strong education that encourages each child to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. We believe that this will equip and inspire them by laying a solid foundation for living a life of obedience to God and service to others.

Thank you for your support of WSCS, and please prayerfully consider what you may be able to do to help us continue this important ministry to the Body of Jesus Christ.
